A school trip to Scotland
Last summer, Mia and her class went on a school trip to the Scottish Highlands. On the first day, they walked slowly up a narrow path to a high ridge. The view of the valley was beautiful. Suddenly, dark clouds came and it started to rain. “Be careful!” shouted their teacher, and they walked back down. On the second day, they went kayaking on a cold loch. Mia had never been kayaking before, but she learned fast. In the evening, the class sat around a fire and told old Scottish legends. Mia said it was the best trip she had ever had.

Nessie — Scotland's greatest mystery

Deep in the Scottish Highlands lies a long, dark lake called Loch Ness. For hundreds of years, people have told stories about a strange creature that lives in its cold water. They call her "Nessie".

The legend is very old, but it became famous in 1933. A man and his wife said they had seen a huge animal cross the road and disappear into the loch. Since then, thousands of tourists have travelled to Loch Ness, hoping to see the monster.

Some people have taken photos, but no one has ever proved that Nessie is real. Scientists have studied the loch carefully many times. They have found nothing — only very deep, dark water.

Is Nessie a dinosaur, a big fish, or just a story? Nobody knows. The mystery has lasted for almost a hundred years, and people still love it.

Today, Loch Ness is one of the most popular places in Scotland. Many visitors take boat tours on the water, and they visit the old castle on the shore. Some people bring special cameras and hope to film something deep under the water.

Life without Wi-Fi: a Welsh village in 1927

What was life like 100 years ago? A class from Llandudno in Wales made a video about a small Welsh village in 1927 — a time without phones, computers or the internet.

In 1927, people wore very different clothes. Women wore long dresses and aprons, and men wore waistcoats and caps. There were no washing machines, so families washed their clothes slowly by hand. They had no cars, so they walked or used a horse. In the evening, there was no electric light — only candles.

Children played happily outside or read books together. Families talked a lot because they had no screens.

There were no big supermarkets. A small shop came to the village with food, and many families kept chickens for eggs. People cooked on a fire in the kitchen.

Today, life is going to be very different again. We are going to use even more technology in the future. But sometimes it is nice to switch off our phones and just talk — like in 1927.

Part 4 · Grammar

🎯 I can use adverbs of manner, the present perfect and possessive pronouns — and spot grammar mistakes.

⏱️ ca. 15 min

12 · Adverbs of manner

Make the adverb from the adjective in brackets.

📐 Rule and example
Adverbs of manner tell us how something happens. Build them: adjective + -ly. slow → slowly, careful → carefully.
Spelling: happy → happily (y→i), gentle → gently.
Irregular: good → well, fast → fast, hard → hard.
After be, look, taste, feel use an adjective: The cake tastes good.
💡 Remember adjective + -ly → adverb (slow → slowly). Watch out: happy → happily, and fast → fast, good → well.
a) The ghost walked through the castle.
b) She closed the door .
c) He ran to the loch.
d) The children laughed .
e) Tourists drive on the small roads.

13 · Present perfect

Put the verb in the present perfect (have/has + past participle).

Use it for an unknown time or for things that still matter now. Signal words: ever, never, already, just, yet.
Regular: play → played. Irregular: see → seen, go → gone, buy → bought, do → done.
Example: I have just finished my homework.
💡 Irregular help be → been · see → seen · do → done · go → gone · read → read · hear → heard · buy → bought · try → tried · finish → finished
a) I to Scotland.
b) She her video.
c) kayaking?
d) We Nessie yet.
e) Tom a new phone.
f) Anna and Ben Conwy Castle.
g) this story before?

i) I my homework.

14 · Possessive pronouns

Replace the words in brackets with a possessive pronoun (mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs).

📐 Rule and example
Possessive pronouns replace my/your/… + noun, so you don't repeat the noun.
my → mine, your → yours, his → his, her → hers, our → ours, their → theirs.
Example: This is my bag. → This bag is mine. (no noun after it!)
💡 Help my → mine · your → yours · his → his · her → hers · our → ours · their → theirs
a) This video is .
b) Is this book ?
c) The bag on the chair is .
d) These tickets are .
e) Look at those bikes — they are .
f) That umbrella is not mine, it is .
g) "Whose dog is that?" — "It must be ."
h) "Whose pencils are these?" — "They are ."

15 · 🔎 Find and fix the mistake

Each sentence has one mistake. Type the corrected word(s) into the box.

📐 Tip: what to check
Each sentence has one mistake. Check three things:
1) adjective or adverb? (slow / slowly)
2) present perfect: have/has + 3rd form (gone, seen, done)

Hi, I am Leah. Last week my class went on a school trip to Scotland, and it was amazing. We stayed in a small village near Loch Ness for four days. On the first day, we went hiking in the Highlands. The path was very narrow and it took us three hours to reach the top. The view of the green valley was beautiful, but the weather changed quickly and it started to rain. On the second day, we went kayaking on the loch. The water was very cold. I had never been kayaking before, but our teacher showed us carefully what to do, and soon I could do it well. In the evening, a local man told us the legend of Nessie, the monster of Loch Ness. He said that people have looked for the creature for almost a hundred years, but no one has ever found it. I do not believe in monsters, but it was a great story. My favourite day was the last one. We visited an old castle on the coast and we saw wild deer in the forest. I took lots of photos and I have already shown them to my family. I really want to go back to Scotland one day.

Hello, and welcome to our podcast about Wales. My name is Carys, and today I want to tell you some interesting facts about my country. First, the Welsh name for Wales is Cymru. Our flag is special: it has a big red dragon on a green and white background. In Wales, we love music and singing, and our national sport is rugby. Wales is famous for its beautiful nature. We have green hills, long beaches and even waterfalls. Did you know that there are about three times more sheep than people here? It is true. A long time ago, many people in Wales worked in coal mining. Today, that has changed. Wales now uses a lot of green energy from wind and water, and we have very fast internet. For our exchange project, my friends and I made short videos about our town. First, we filmed the castle and the beach. Then we edited the videos on our phones: we cut the boring parts, added some music and a voice-over, and uploaded everything to the app. It took a long time, but it was really fun. We hope you enjoy our videos and that you will visit Wales soon. Goodbye.
